Psalm 37:4

Verse of the Day Devotion: Psalm 37:4

“Delight yourself in the LORD; And He will give you the desires of your heart.” – Psalm 37:4

This is a psalm of David.  The first three verses lead up to this verse.  “Do not fret because of evildoers, Be not envious toward wrongdoers. For they will wither quickly like the grass And fade like the green herb. Trust in the LORD and do good; Dwell in the land and cultivate faithfulness.”  Psalm 37:1-3.  David begins by saying that we are not to fret because of evil doers.  The Hebrew word translated ‘fret’ denotes not to get angry or heated up.  We are told not to get worried or envious because wrongdoers are prosperous and successful, and we are not.  The will not last because of their wickedness, even though it looks as though they will.

In fact, going into verse three, we are to confide and rest in Him.  Instead of being anxious and upset that you are doing good and not being as successful as those who do wrong, we are to trust in Him, continuing to do good.  We are to continue to go forward in doing what is right, to continue doing the work of benevolence, helping those who are wronged by those who do wrong.  Think about it, there is wickedness all around us.  The world is full of those who treat people bad, prospering at the expense of others.  This is more reason for us to endeavor to do good, if but to counter the evil being done.  We are to live here and do good when needed,

How can we do this and not get discouraged?  We will not find true happiness in a world filled with evil, nor in participating with them.  We should always seek our happiness in God.  We should seek it in His being, who He is, the Almighty God who loves us, who is perfect in all His ways, who are His friends.  This is what He means by delighting ourselves in Him.  If we live as God has called us to, and we trust completely in Him no matter what happens, then we can live a life of ease and contentment.  We can live a life of bliss if we will just give Him all our cares.

And lastly, it says He will give us the desires of our heart.  As we become closer and closer to God; growing more in our love for Him, as we continue to live completely to please Him, our desires will change to conform to what His desires are for us.  We will only desire that which is good and honorable to God.  When our delight is completely in Him, then we will delight in those things He delights to give us.  And this is a great place to be.

Let us work to develop a heart that delights only in God and what He has provided to us and what He desires to give us and let us remove any desire that is not honoring to God.  Let us delight in who He is, trusting completely whatever situation we find ourselves in.  For in this, peace resides, and worries flee.

Hosea 6:6

Verse of the Day Devotion:  Hosea 6:6

“For I delight in loyalty rather than sacrifice, and in the knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings.” – Hosea 6:6

The prophet Hosea sees both Israel and Judah operating in sin and He tells them at the end of chapter 5 that they will soon experience God’s punishment.  “For I will be like a lion to Ephraim And like a young lion to the house of Judah. I, even I, will tear to pieces and go away, I will carry away, and there will be none to deliver. I will go away and return to My place Until they acknowledge their guilt and seek My face; In their affliction they will earnestly seek Me.” Hosea 5:14-15.  And the major sin they committed was idolatry, which they had chosen over the true God..  “Hear this, O priests! Give heed, O house of Israel! Listen, O house of the king! For the judgment applies to you, for you have been a snare at Mizpah And a net spread out on Tabor. The revolters have gone deep in depravity, But I will chastise all of them.  I know Ephraim, and Israel is not hidden from Me; For now, O Ephraim, you have played the harlot, Israel has defiled itself. Their deeds will not allow them To return to their God. For a spirit of harlotry is within them, And they do not know the LORD.”  Hosea 5:1-4.  Therefore, the prophet is calling them to return to the Lord.  The prophet trying to encourage them that if they return to God, He will retore them, thus giving them a motive to return because things will be made good again.

However, in chapter six, we see that this was not acceptable, for more was required of them.  “What shall I do with you, O Ephraim? What shall I do with you, O Judah? For your loyalty is like a morning cloud And like the dew which goes away early.” Hosea 6:4. The problem stated here by the Lord was that they may put forth a form of loyalty, but it would not be true and thus would not last.  This did seem to be the pattern of Israel through history.  He declares to them this loyalty would not last. It would be temporary as it always was.  He used the picture of the morning clouds which disappear when the sun rises, and like the due that falls in the night which quickly dries up when the heat of the morning sun comes.

And because of this, He has sharply reproved them through the prophets.  “Therefore, I have hewn them in pieces by the prophets; I have slain them by the words of My mouth; And the judgments on you are like the light that goes forth.” Hosea 6:5. This is similar to wording used with Jeremiah where God tells him, “Is not My word like fire?” declares the LORD, “and like a hammer which shatters a rock?” Jeremiah 23:29. The idea is that God’s word rouses and strengthens the conscience yet crushes within the heart everything that is evil.  His word is used to shape and mold us, while destroying the evil that resides in us.  And this judgement is as the light going forth, that others may see it and tremble.  This is similar to what Matthew wrote when he said, “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden;” Matthew 5:14.

Then we come to our focus verse.  “For I delight in loyalty rather than sacrifice, And in the knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings.”  Hosea 6:6. God desires loyalty, love and a relationship with them above sacrifice and tradition.  He desires them to learn about Him and know Him better, then to simply present burnt offerings.

And He desires the same from us today.  He wants a loving relationship with us, where we seek Him with all we are, not just one where we simply follow the rules and when we do wrong, we perform some ritual that we believe will make all things right.   Christianity is all about a relationship with God, and not simply rituals we perform.  This is what God was telling Hosea in our focus verse.  Rituals and customs are not bad in and of themselves, but if not done out of love or without giving God our all is simply works.  Let us always focus on our relationship with Him, for this is what He desires.

Psalm 94:19

Verse of the Day Devotion:  Psalm 94:19

“When my anxious thoughts multiply within me, your consolations delight my soul.” – Psalm 94:19

As the world moves forward, it is easy to see how people are getting nervous about where we are being taken.  And we see this especially true in the United States.  There is much we can talk about, however I want to focus on only a couple and hopefully bring some solace, for we have every reason to be at peace.

The first is the pandemic.  We see all forms of fear being spread among people, such as if  we get near someone infected by Covid-19 we will become infected as well and may die.  It is important to remember that with God, all things are possible.  “And looking at them Jesus said to them, “With people this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” Matthew 19:26.  There is not one disease or illness that is beyond His ability to heal.  David said it like this.  “Bless the LORD, O my soul, And all that is within me, bless His holy name. Bless the LORD, O my soul, And forget none of His benefits; Who pardons all your iniquities, Who heals all your diseases; Who redeems your life from the pit, Who crowns you with lovingkindness and compassion;” Psalm 103:1-4.  God is fully capable of pardoning all our iniquities and to heal every one of our illnesses.  And this includes COVID-19.

The other issue is the 2020 Presidential Election.  The fear that is being perpetuated upon us is unbelievable.  Yes, it does appear that the results of our election were manipulated to the benefit of the left.  However, this should not be a reason for fear, for God is in control.  Even though man believes he is, this is simply a delusion.  Things may not go the way we want it to, but all will go well.  “And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.” Romans 8:28.  I know I use this verse a lot, but to me it is one of the most comforting and uplifting in all of scripture.  Not that some but ALL things work toward our good for those who love Him.

There is no reason for us to be anxious about these things, or anything else as well.  As our focus verse says, “When my anxious thoughts multiply within me, Your consolations delight my soul.” Psalm 94:19. We must reach out to God regarding these issues, and all others, and He will bring consolation to our souls.  Let us look at some other verses that are comforting when understood and taken to heart.  “Do not fear, for I am with you; Do not anxiously look about you, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, surely I will help you, Surely I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.” Isaiah 41:10.  During these difficult times, look to God and He will be there to strengthen and comfort you.  And God has plans for all of us.  “For I know the plans that I have for you,’ declares the LORD, ‘plans for welfare and not for calamity to give you a future and a hope.” Jeremiah 29:11.  Man’s plans may be self-centered and for the benefit of a few, however God says His plans for us are for our good, and to give us a glorious hope and future.  What is happening now is nothing compared to the glory we shall see in our future.  God has nothing but good planned for us.  “The LORD of hosts has sworn saying, “Surely, just as I have intended so it has happened, and just as I have planned so it will stand,” Isaiah 14:24.  And nothing can thwart this.  “For the LORD of hosts has planned, and who can frustrate it? And as for His stretched-out hand, who can turn it back?” Isaiah 14:27.

One thing I have learned in my many years as a true and devoted Christian is that though things may not look all that good and positive, God can bring us through anything that the enemy has planned.  He knows the end from the beginning and He is completely in charge.  As David said of Him, “Blessed are You, O LORD God of Israel our father, forever and ever. Yours, O LORD, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the victory and the majesty, indeed everything that is in the heavens and the earth; Yours is the dominion, O LORD, and You exalt Yourself as head over all.” 1 Chronicles 29:10-11.  Let us always remember this and focus our thoughts on His greatness and not man’s foolishness.
